The JX print engine and cartridge were introduced in 1995 with the 8 page per minute (ppm) Interface Systems 9308 laser printer. In January 1996, Xante used this B-size Canon engine in its Accel-A-Writer 8300, a high resolution printer aimed at the graphics market.
The JX remains a popular engine in Asian markets and the EP-J cartridge has been considered the EX of Japan due to its high number of placements.
